Who Can We Trust in a Digital World?
Join us for a vital discussion on disinformation in the digital age in collaboration with Global Witness.
Most of us get news and information online, but in a rapidly changing digital landscape, trustworthy sources are becoming harder to find.
Social media platforms prioritise politics and profits over user protection, making it easier for disinformation to spread. False narratives about critical issues, including climate change and elections, have serious long-term consequences for society.
In this collaboration with Global Witness, we’ll explore how disinformation spreads, who fuels it and how it could be better contained. We’ll also discuss how to fight back against misleading information and stay better informed on the issues that matter.
Join the conversation and learn how to navigate today’s digital world with confidence.
Speaker bios
Marc Jones
Marc is the Curator of Fossil Reptiles and Amphibians at London’s Natural History Museum. His research covers a wide variety of topics, including the evolution of salamanders and bite force in lizards. He’s also maintained an interest in climate change since his university degree in Palaeobiology, which included several modules on the subject.
Ava Lee
Ava is a campaigner at Global Witness – an organisation dedicated to investigating and exposing environmental and human rights abuses. For the past five years, she’s led a team tackling the harms caused by big tech companies. Her work has revealed how Meta’s job-advertising algorithm discriminates based on gender, violating equalities laws. She’s also led investigations into major platforms, including Meta, TikTok, X and YouTube, showing their failure to address incitement to violence in Myanmar and Ethiopia. Ava’s research has also highlighted how tech companies are unprepared for electoral misinformation in key elections across the world. Most recently, she headed up a climate disinformation unit, exposing networks spreading false information, including a bot campaign linked to Azerbaijan’s COP presidency.
Disha Ravi
Disha is a climate and environmental justice activist who founded Fridays For Future India in 2019. She was dubbed The Climate Change Agent in the Forbes Women Power List in 2021 and Vogue India named her one of nine Indian climate warriors paving the way for a more sustainable tomorrow. After seeing her family impacted by the water crisis, Disha became an activist advocating for better policies and governance for the climate and environmental sector. She’s a writer and is passionate about making sure the voices of the Most Affected People and Areas are heard in climate conversations.
